A Single Mother’s Journey from Fear to Ease in San Miguel de Allende

My daughter had just turned two years old when we moved to San Miguel de Allende. Many people thought I was crazy to move to Mexico with a toddler.

I had always thought I would move to another country with a partner. But when I unexpectedly became a single mother, I realized I did have a little partner. So, if not now, when?

I had been putting off my dream of living in another country for 20 years out of fear.

This time, I couldn't deny the longing in my heart to live abroad, immerse myself in another culture with rich traditions, and check off my dream of learning another language.

My body was falling apart from heartbreak, denying this longing and overwhelmed with the load of motherhood on my own (not to mention a worldwide pandemic when my daughter was 6 months old).

I was suffering from chronic inflammation, pain, and exhaustion and was going to holistic therapy after therapy....truly only managing everything.

I remember standing in my kitchen in Indianapolis trying to make the decision to move here to San Miguel de Allende...a place that seemed to flow with so much ease when we visited.

And I realized that I was fighting and fearful of living a life with ease. I didn't know what that looked like as I had always been used to working hard, a swirl of chaos or drama, making shit happen...the list goes on.

What if my life could be EASY?

We made the leap to México over 2 years ago now. Now, both of us are bilingual and speak Spanish.

I dance tango every week...sometimes salsa or cumbia, too. 💃🏻

I do a 2-hour yoga class and/or Pilates every week and I can finally feel my muscles working underneath my c-section scar (4 1/2 years later).

We have been on sacred pilgrimages to hunt for peyote with friends and spiritual elders from the Chichimeca tribe.

I have a community of support.

I feel like I belong somewhere.

My body and heart feel good.
